Temple of Zeus, Olympia
Back from holidays to a very rainy Ireland. The back garden isw a rain forest. In the meantime this weekend the Olympics have started- and the even more frenetic propaganda from China. I visited the real Olympia while I was away...

update
Quite a while since I posted here.....
The good news is that the ICROSS projects in Kenya have survived the political fall out in Kenya- we must wait and see what the long term political future is. ICROSS Ireland however is not as supportive as might be expected.... not sure what is happening there. I know that any support or help I am giving at the moment I give directly to ICROSS Kenya - bacause I have been there and have met the people who are doing the work - and more importantly the people and communities who benefit from that work.
And Summer is here....

update on violence in Kenya -from ICROSS Kenya
Latest on Kenyan crisis..
(04 February 2008)
The current crisis in Kenya has displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Thousands of homes have been destroyed and livelihoods lost. ICROSS has projects in three crisis areas.
During last weeks violence ICROSS closed its office in Nakuru withdrawing teams from Nakuru town in the wake of the riots that resulted in hundreds fleeing their homes and sections of the city were set on fire. The Nakuru office has reopened and all health teams, project staff and medical teams are at work.
We are trying to reach as many displaced people as possible including hundreds of children in need of help. Patients, those caring for them and their children are experiencing fear and distress, One little girl was reunited with her sick mother. She had been lost for three days and told how a mob set fire to her small hut, they lost everything inside and everyone kept running until they got to the forest. " It was dark and we thought we would be killed, I don't know why they don't like us, we did nothing wrong to them" she said. She was one of many children who are at risk and vulnerable.
International Director Dr. Michael Elmore-Meegan said today in Nakuru "ICROSS will continue to stay in the villages and provide whatever practical help and support as we can. We need any help and support we can get."

Update from Kenya
Mike has been able to return to the base in Ngong- however the situation in Kenya remains serious with about 250,000 people reported displaced, and many afraid to return to their homes because of ethnic violence- for others their homes have been looted or burned so they have no homes anyway. Water supplies and food shortages are a problem, as are diarrhoeal diseases. Some of Mike's staff have also lost their homes, however they are all doing as much as they can to help in the various areas where they have a local infrastructure. ICROSS is a small organisation that depends on donations to do much of the local relief work in which it is involved. If anyone out there reading this wants to donate they can do so to ICROSS- the website is www.icross.ie.- there is online facility to donate and the new postal address ( not yet updated on website I think) is 1A Alma Place, Monkstown, Co. Dublin. RoI.
